I’ve been having a really good time in terms of controlling my mental health and I’m feeling really strong about it. However, there are some times where it becomes challenging and I face set backs like quite recently and end up in that state.
On a positive note though it doesn’t happen as frequently as it used to and nor does it last for that long, and as the time has gone by I can still function throughout the day and push through to do what I still need to do, which also means my “triggers” (when there is one) don’t affect me as much as it used to.
For me it was all about management, because I don’t think it can ever fully go away, it’s always lingering, but you can always work to get to a point where you are strong enough to deal with it with a lot more ease so it’s not really troublesome. The main things I try implement in my daily routine are:
- Guided Imagery
- Getting out the house (even if its walking around the block once)
- Motivational videos
Everything I do is mostly centered around managing stress and just trying to be as calm as possible in any situation. So the things like meditation and guided imagery really help me, with being calm and clearing my mind. I also play a lot of brain training games, puzzles and stuff like that, which I think helps in a crazy way. The motivational videos really add those positive affirmations as well as the guided imagery, which I think is lacking in my life and my environment. Although, the ones I watch mostly are those “tough love” type ones as I think you need it because life isn’t all fairies and rainbows so you do need that kick up the backside sometimes. And most importantly getting out the house is really beneficial no matter how small it is. I have been starting to ride my bike everyday around the park (when it’s not raining lol) and it’s actually so therapeutic, and also being active in general just really helps you throughout the day and makes you feel good.
One thing I’ve learnt to come to grips with is that IT’S OK TO HAVE A RELAPSE! It doesn’t mean you have failed or you’re a failure, which is what I thought every single time and I would end up giving up and not trying anymore. You shouldn’t be to hard on yourself because it’s all part of the recovery process and these things are not in your control. Always remember if you can do it once, you definitely do it again! The path isn’t meant to be linear, it’s a roller coaster with a lot of up and downs, and with each down you’ll pick up on the signs and triggers a lot more and a lot earlier, in which you’ll be able to do something a lot quicker and easier however many times you need.
If there is one thing I do need to work on is talking to people more. I’ve really instilled this “me against the world” mindset, which is not really through any fault of my own, but things have changed since that long period of time I used to face and I should try to reach out more instead of internalizing everything and trying to handle everything on my own.
