Fortnite reportedly earned a whopping $1.2 billion last summer with the mass of the revenue coming from the in-app purchases for the player’s characters.
One of the in-app purchases are the dances for the avatars, which are called emotes. There has been a wave of lawsuits flooding Epic recently including; Russell Horning (Backpack Kid), Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), and most notable rapper 2 Milly, whose created dance move has been used by Fornite without permission.
There is no doubt Epic have made their astronomical revenue off the downloadable content in the game, and the dance moves definitely aid largely to the popularity of the game. For example, The “Fresh” emote, which is Alfonso Ribeiro’s dance (“Fresh” Prince of Bel-Air) costs 800 V-Bucks (Fortnite currency) and buying 1,000 V-Bucks costs £7.99. Imagine the number of people worldwide that have bought just that once dance and how much money Epic have made from it.
I personally feel Epic cannot be allowed to continue to take what doesn’t belong to them and profiting from it without at least compensating the originators. Got all these kids thinking everything comes from Fortnite when that’s not the case.
Let me know what you guys think though.
